Summary: Poland and Germany progress; group B wide open
Sunday 16 January sees the second round of groups B and D, with hosts Hungary hoping to bounce back from their round 1 defeat.
What a group we have in Budapest! Yet another close clash that leaves us wondering who on earth deserves to be left behind.
Iceland go to the break with an edge but it is far from decisive and the Netherlands are very much in the game. After the Netherlands surprised Hungary in round 1, it is great to see them backing up that performance and showing it was no one-off. The race for the two main round from group B tickets is very hot indeed.
Poland seems to be much more focused in the match, backed with great support from their fans. Belarus's problems with efficiency in attack from the second half against Germany have transferred to this clash too. Mikita Vailupau and goalkeeper Ilya Usik are the ones keeping Iouri Chevtsov’s team hopes high. After trailing by five they managed to close the gap before the break.
It was a nervous start to the game for Hungary, who once again found themselves on the back foot early on due largely to great form from Portugal goalkeeper Gustavo Capdeville. But after 15 minutes, Hungary took the lead for the first time in the game and at their home EHF EURO. The nerves seem to finally be gone for Hungary, while on the other side Portugal are also looking more themselves than they did in their opener against Iceland. And so we have a great battle for the two points here in Budapest.
While you could have thought that Germany would have fixed their defensive problem since the game against Belarus, clearly they have not. And that is despite Till Klimpke recording eight saves. Clearly, if Austria keep up the rhythm offensively, we might looking at one major surprise here in Bratislava.

For a few minutes it looked as though Hungary were going to crumble under the pressure of their 20,000 fans' expectations - but now they're playing some superb handball and it's Portugal who are struggling to keep the pace. Victor Iturizza has been suspended for a second time, potentially robbing Paulo Pereira of an important asset in the second half.
However, Portugal have been handed a lifeline. After a foul, a save by Mikler and a goal from Dominik Mathe, the foul went to video replay and the goal was disallowed with Petar Topic suspended. It's back to 9:10.

The volume is rising in Budapest. Hungary, after a very poor start in which they lost the ball and faced an impressive Gustavo Capdeville, have pulled back to just one goal down against Portugal. Paulo Pereira calls his first timeout at 11 minutes 50.

When it's full with Hungarian fans it's impossible to hear yourself think, and even with slightly fewer people on Friday night as Portugal faced Iceland, it was incredible.
